Can masturbation cause premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is a condition where a man ejaculates too quickly either before sex, after sexual penetration, or before he and his partner are fully satisfied. It's an embarrassing problem for men, and is often uncomfortable for a man to even talk about, let alone admit that he has a problem with it.
But what are some of the potential causes of this sexual dysfunction? There's a debate whether or not masturbation may lead to causing PE. Some experts say it definitively leads to the problem, while others disagree and say it can even help to prevent premature ejaculation.
Those who say masturbation causes premature ejaculation cite a typical mans hurriedness to achieve orgasm. Because a man has a one track mind when masturbating, they are only concerned with climaxing, and don't really care about making self pleasure last longer. Consequently, what can happen over time is that a man becomes too sensitive to sexual stimulation and gets in the habit of prematurely ejaculating without even wanting to.
On the other hand, there are those who say that masturbation can actually help. Their logic stems from the idea that when masturbating, a man will know his own sexual responses better, and be able to take charge over his urges in order to delay orgasm for a longer period of time.
While both sides may have some truth to them, it does depend on the individual to know their own body, so they can help to control any possible PE. Sexual trial and error with a loving and understanding partner may be necessary for a man to help overcome his tendencies toward P.E. Since masturbation is usually quite different from sex with another person, couples will have to experiment with different methods of control when they are with each other. Then, over time, they can find out if a man masturbating is either causing this sexual dysfunction, or helping to prevent it.
